Michael Mann’s Movie Wasn’t A Critical Dud
Mann is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s great filmmakers, responsible for movies likeHeat,Collateral, andLast of the Mohicans. In recent decades, however, not all the filmmaker’s projects can be considered successes. AlthoughFerrari’s reviewswere mostly positive, this film can certainly be counted among his titles to not make a particularly large splash in theaters.
Mann’s next movie could beHeat 2, which Driver is reportedly being eyed to star in.
Ferrari’s budget is estimated to be about $95 million, making its $42.3 million box office haul a clear disappointment. Using the standard Hollywood formula,Ferrariwould be looking at a break-even point of roughly $237 million to account for budget, distribution, theaters' cuts, and marketing. Even if the actual break-even point is lower than this, the Mann film undoubtedly lost money during its theatrical run.
The Reelgood chart above, however, suggests thatFerrariis now finding its audience. The movie has a respectableRotten Tomatoesscore of 72%, and the audience score is higher at 74%, suggesting that those who do watch it tend to enjoy it. At least some of this enjoyment is surely due to the movie’s impressive and intense racing scenes, andFerrari’s depiction of the Mille Miglia accident.Ferrarimay not have been a theatrical success, but it’s availability on streaming has evidently allowed more people to revisit the movie or check it out for the first time.
