Warning! Contains Spoilers For Batman #148!

Batmanhas been fighting against a twisted version of himself lately, in the form of Zur-En-Arrh. Understandably, this has made Zur one of the hardest villains Batman has ever had to beat, and he ultimately managed to do so – by sacrificingRed Hood. While it seems there was no other way to defeat Zur-En-Arrh, this was still a major moment for both Batman and Red Hood.

Batman#148 – written by Chip Zdarsky, with art by Jorge Jimenez – featured the shockingclimax to the Caped Crusader’s battle with Zur-En-Arrh. While Zur still has an entire army of robots and a nearly indestructible body due to the Failsafe Android, Batman comes up with the only plan capable of defeating Zur.

Batman #148, Zur-En-Arrh kills Jason Todd with a brutal uppercut.

While battling Zur-En-Arrh, Jason takes a fatal blow to the head, killing him instantly. It’s a seemingly tragic moment, with Batman overcome with grief at the death of his son, only for it to be revealed that this was part of Bruce’s plan to bring Zur down once and for all.

Jason Todd’s Second Death Is A Triumph, Rather Than A Tragedy

Batman#148 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jimenez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles.

Jason’s death was the key needed to defeat Zur – and thankfully, Batman had a plan so that this death wasn’t permanent.

Red Hood is likely the Robin who has hadthe most experience with death, as his character is almost entirely defined by the death he suffered at the hands of the Joker. Batman’s plan to defeat Zur-En-Arrh required someone to die. While Batman originally planned to sacrifice himself, Red Hood knew the world needed Batman a lot more than it needed him, and volunteered to die in his place. It’s a pretty heartbreaking sacrifice, as Red Hood’s character has never been able to escape death, and now to stop Batman’s most dangerous villain, he had to embrace it.

Comic book art: the dark robotic Batman known as Failsafe.

The biggest ruleBatman has is his no-kill rule.Failsafe was an android specifically built to make sure that rule was followed. If Batman ever killed, Failsafe would activate and hunt him down. By tricking Zur-En-Arrh into killing Jason, Failsafe’s program was activated again, shutting Zur-En-Arrh’s body down from the inside. No matter what Batman becomes,he must never become a killer, and that was something Zur forgot.Jason’s death was the key needed to defeat Zur – and thankfully, Batman had a plan so that this death wasn’t permanent.

Batman was completely unable to save Jason the first time he died, but this time, Batman was prepared, and was able to save his son.
