Summary

Demon SlayerHashira Training Arcepisode 5 saw Tanjiro endure the difficult training of the Serpent Hashira, and then get into a fight with the Wind Hashira over his brother. While Tanjiro was chastised for his behavior, his punishment was only to move along to the next Hashira’s training, setting him up to spend episode 6 with the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima.

In contrast to the previous two episodes, which featured a lot of anime original content, this episode is largely drawn straight from the manga. This is a bit unfortunate, as it meant that the Love Hashira’s training was kept quite short in the anime, as it was in the manga, and thus fans don’t get as much time with the character as they might’ve liked. With the Wind and Serpent Hashira training taking place in this episode as well, it’s quite the full episode in terms of content. These two are among the least familiar Hashira, so spending a little time with them helps their characterization, even if both still come across as jerks. Here’s how to watch episode 6 as soon as it drops.

What Happened in Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Episode #5?

Tanjiro Defends a Friend’s Honor

Episode 5 of the Hashira Training arcsaw Tanjiro moving very quickly through training compared to previous episodes, first passing through Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji’s flexibility training before moving on to Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro’s accuracy training. Iguro had a bone to pick with Tanjiro, and set him up with a brutally sadistic training regimen where he had to avoid striking his fellow demon slayers while hitting very small targets. Iguro escalated the training further, striking back and using the other slayers to hide behind, but eventually passed Tanjiro and sent him on his way.

Things went even less smoothly with the Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa, whose training was so brutal it left Tanjiro covered in ugly bruises. Tanjiro overheard Genya trying to speak to Sanemi, who is his older brother, but the latter acts as if he has no brother. That is, until Genya mentions eating demon flesh, at which point Sanemi began to beat Genya, prompting Tanjiro to intervene. Their fight got destructive, and lasted most of the day, culminating with Tanjiro being censured and ending his training with the Wind Hashira early.

Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Episode #5 Delves into The Least Known Hashira

The Wind Hashira and Serpent Hashira Reveal Themselves… as Jerks

While Tanjiro has performed missions alongside Uzui, Tokito, andMitsuri Kanrojibefore, Iguro and Sanemi Shinazugawa were two of the Hashira with the least characterization at this point. All fans really knew about them is that they were against letting Nezuko live, which certainly didn’t help to endear them to anyone. As it turns out, they’re really not all that likable. While they get along with each other okay, as evidenced by their training and working together in the previous episodes, both have a dislike of Tanjiro specifically and treat him worse because of it.

Iguro’s grudge against Tanjiro seems largely rooted in jealousy; he can’t stand to see anyone get close to Mitsuri, and Tanjiro’s friendliness with her seems to infuriate him. Sanemi Shinazugawa seems to just hate everyone, but he certainly has it out for Tanjiro after their fight. Frankly, it doesn’t matter how skilled he is–his behavior is simply not befitting of a Hashira. It’s a wonder the others have been able to put up with him for so long. Ultimately, this episode ofDemon Slayerprobably could’ve used a bit more expansion like the last few episodes, but it’s certainly an exciting one due to all the conflict.
