Summary
14 years after the last mainlineShrekfilm,Shrek 5remains an intriguing prospect, but my heart is set on a completely differentShreksequel that I think would be even better. TheShrekfranchise has been a prominent part of animation since its first movie in 2001. The standoffish ogre proved that animated protagonists do not have to be beautiful or happy.Shrekalso put Dreamworks on the map as a real alternative to Disney. These days, theShrekfranchise moviesare still breaking boundaries, and for that reason, oneShreksequel stands above the rest.
Shrek 5has been in development for several years now, but only recently was the movie truly confirmed. In a recent interview withCollider,Eddie Murphy revealed that the first half of theShrek 5moviehas already been recorded. He predictedShrek 5will be released in 2025. Murphy also noted that aDonkeyspinoff movie is happening. All in all, this is very exciting news for theShrekfranchise, but I still feel something is missing. I can’t wait to see Shrek and Donkey back on the big screen, but there’s another movie that I’d be much more excited for.

Shrek: 30 Things Everyone Completely Missed In The DreamWorks Movie
Shrek is filled to the brim with fairytale references but the film is also abundant with details that many fans missed out on.
Puss In Boots 3 Is The Sequel The Shrek Franchise Really Needs, Not Shrek 5
Puss In Boots Is More Relevant Right Now
As much as I’m excited about Shrek’s return inShrek 5,I need a potentialPuss in Boots 3movieway more. Namely, this is becausePuss in Bootsis much more important to me– and crucially to audiences – right now. AfterPuss in Boots: The Last Wish’sincredible success in 2022, the charming cat’s story is much more urgent.Puss in Boots 2gave Dreamworks its best domestic box office performance in almost a decade. Not to mention, the movie earned an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Since we have already waited a decade forShrek 5,I could wait a little longer.
I want anotherShrek, but I would hate to seePuss in Boots’energy sapped by a completely differentShrekmovie.

The same argument goes for theDonkeyspinoff. While Donkey is certainly a lovable and hilarious character, he will bring a story that is vastly different from whatPuss in Bootshas done.Puss in Boots: The Last Wishoffered a funny yet deeply meaningful storythat has the potential to grow into even more sequels.Shrekcertainly has potential as well, but in some ways, it has already been explored via the three other mainline sequels. Ultimately, I want anotherShrek, but I would hate to seePuss in Boots’energy sapped by a completely differentShrekmovie.
Will Puss In Boots 3 Happen?
Puss In Boots 3 Could Happen
Unfortunately, my hopes for theShrekfranchise are likely misplaced. There is no news about whetherPuss in Boots 3is happening. Following the release ofPuss in Boots: The Last Wish, thechances ofPuss in Boots 3were discussed by Joel Crawford. The director said that he had no idea where the franchise would go next, but had hopes that the character Puss in Boots would return. Crawford said, “I feel like I can say based on the world’s reception of it, that it does feel like they’ve said ‘Yes, we want more,’ which I’m so happy about.”

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
Joel Crawford & Januel P. Mercado
I thinkPuss in Boots 3could definitely happen, but not for a while. As Joel Crawford stated,Puss in Boots: The Last Wishhad such a positive reaction, it would be strange if a sequel didn’t happen. However, withShrek 5and aDonkeyspinoff in the future,it seemsPuss in Bootswill get put on the backburnerfor a while. While I have to admit I am disappointed, theShrekfranchise is a film series that consistently delivers. No matter what comes next forShrek,I will be at the movie theater regardless.
