Summary

I thinkStar Trek: Lower Decksisn’t quite dead yet. The announcement of theend of Star Trek: Lower Deckscame earlier this year, along with the renewal ofStar Trek: Strange New Worldsfor season 4. It makes sense forStar Trek: Lower Decksto reach a natural ending, given the concept ofLower Decksfocusing on the USS Cerritos' junior officers. On the officialStar TrekInstagram account, however,a statement from series creator Mike McMahan andStar Trekshowrunner Alex Kurtzman indicatedLower Decks’ending was unplanned, saying they"remain hopeful … that the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures."

It’s normal for creators to offer glimmers of hope when a beloved show ends – who wouldn’t want their show to continue, after all? – and there’s an extra layer of hope becauseStar Trekhas a long-running history of returning from the dead.Letter-writing campaigns savedStar Trek: The Original Seriesnot once, but twice, givingTOSits 3-season run.Star Trek: The Animated Seriesand subsequent feature films revived the original crew of the USS Enterprise yet again.Star Trek: The Next Generationproved a spinoff could work, andTNG’s cast was reunited inStar Trek: Picard. But things are different fornewStarTrekshows.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 - Everything You Need To Know

Star Trek: Lower Decks to the franchise where it had never been before with five seasons of comic antics, but sadly the show went off the air as well.

Star Trek: Middle Decks Might Not Be Such A Weird Idea

5 Seasons Of Star Trek: Lower Decks Is A Lot In Streaming

Consider: the premise ofStar Trek: Lower Deckshas a relatively limited life span, becausea series about junior officers in Starfleet only has a few years, at best, beforeLower Decks' main characters are promoted out of the concept. While it might be possible to cycle in a"new class", with our current faves in mentorship roles, the point is that we’re already invested inStar Trek: Lower Decks’characters. We want to see Lieutenants Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells), and Samanthan Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) grow into the people they’re becoming. Why not just renewStar Trek: Lower Deckswith a new name?

Star Trek: Lower Decks' humor will no doubt continue even if the show doesn’t, because Tawny Newsome remains part of theStar Trekfamily as a writer onStar Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek Needs A TNG-Era Show

Animation Keeps 24th Century Trek Current

WithStar Trek: Strange New Worldsin the 23rd century, and the upcomingStar Trek: Starfleet Academyset in the 32nd century,Star Trekwon’t have a show that takes place in theStar Trek: The Next Generationera.Star Trek: Picardcame to its planned ending, and the future doesn’t look bright forStar Trek: Legacy,so afterStar Trek: Lower DecksandStar Trek: Prodigyend in 2024, the door closes on 24th centuryStar Trekfor the foreseeable future. That seems weird whenTNG,DS9,andVoyagerare the most familiar versions ofStar Trekfor a sizable group of fans.

With a potential continuation ofStar Trek: Lower Decks, that door stays open.TNG-eraStar Trekactors can reprise their roles believably in animation, which is relatively inexpensive to produce compared to live-actionStar Trek. Of course, with nothing announced, we probably won’t see aStar Trek: Lower Deckssequel series any time soon, butit’s suspicious that there are no known plans for more stories in what is arguablyStar Trek’s most popular era. Ultimately, I hope we’ll get to see more stories about the USS Cerritos crew onceStar Trek: Lower Decksseason 5 is over – with or withoutStar Trek: Lower Decksundergoing a surprise rebrand.
