Inside Out 2has earned a staggering gross during its first week in theaters. The new Pixar animated movie is the second installment in the franchise that began in 2015. It continues to follow the anthropomorphized emotions inside the head of young girl Riley, who is now approaching puberty and is forced to reckon with unsettling new emotions. So far, the only movies that are still above it on the worldwide box office chart for the year areKung Fu Panda 4,Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire(which recently became the highest-grossing movie in the Monsterverse), and the Denis Villeneuve sci-fi epicDune: Part Two.

The success of theInside Out 2releasein just a single week is staggering. The amount of money it has already made would be enough for the average modern animated movie to be considered a hit. In fact, its single-week gross hasbeaten out the entire runs of all but 12 animated movies that have been released in the past five years, including the photorealistically animated remake ofThe Lion King. The movie still has a way to climb if it wants to become an all-time record-breaker. However, there is quite a bit of runway for it to continue dominating the global box office, as it is only in its first week. Additionally, even if it takes a huge hit in its second weekend and suffers a relatively drastic 60% drop, it will still hit a cumulative worldwide total of roughly $615 million,shooting it past five of the movies above it on the chartof the best-performing animated movies of the last five years.
A steep drop seems unlikely though, asInside Out 2reviewshave given the movie a glowing Certified Fresh score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences have given it an even better 96% score. There also won’t be significant competition from another family movie tentpole for quite some time. The next comparable blockbuster currently on the schedule isDespicable Me 4, which is set to premiere on July 3, giving the Pixar movie two more free weekends to accumulate as much box office as possible.

Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the 2015 original film, which starred a young girl named Riley with a head full of emotions. - literally. With Amy Pohler as Joy, Bill Hader as fear, Mindy Kaling as Disgust, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, the all-star cast brought to life the emotions that adolescents face as they grow, change, and adapt to new situations. This sequel, currently in development, will bring Amy Pohler back as Joy, with Riley, now a teenager.
