The new images affirm thatThe War of the Rohirrimwill feature a relatively familiar anime style, but also that the movie will feature elements from Peter Jackson’s beloved trilogy. The design of the Rohirrim sword hilt in Hèra’s hand, for example, is very much the same as in Jackson’s films. In theEWarticle, however, Wise reveals thatHèra has more in common with the female heroes of Hayao Miyazaki films thanLord of the Ringscharacters like Éowyn or Arwen.

The War of the Rohirrimshares creative DNA with theLord of the Ringstrilogy. Jackson and co-writer Fran Walsh serve as executive producers on the film, while their co-writer, Philippa Boyens, produces. Miranda Otto returns to voice Éowyn.

The War Of The Rohirrim Will Be A Big Test For The Lord Of The Rings

Will There Be More Animated Middle-earth Projects In The Future?

Other than a handful of generally underwhelming animated movies in the 1970s and ’80s,The Lord of the Ringsfranchise has thus far remained firmly in the realm of live-action. After Jackson returned to the world of Middle-earth with hisdivisiveThe Hobbittrilogy, Prime Video would take a crack at adapting J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material withThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. While multiple more live-action projects in the franchise are expected to come out in the years ahead,The War of the Rohirrimis the only planned animated movie.

In many ways,The Lord of the Ringsfeels well-suited to the world of animationdue to the wonders of theworld of Middle-earthand the franchise’s fantasy storytelling. Whether any additional animated projects move forward, however, will likely depend on howThe War of the Rohirrimis received. It’s not clear what the budget for the upcoming anime is, but the film evidently represents a big investment as it’s said to be about two hours and 30 minutes long, with as many as 60 companies having been brought on to support main animation studio Sola Entertainment (perTheWrap).
