Robert Eggers' Nosferatu Remake Looks Absolutely Terrifying
(Even Without Revealing The Titular Vampire)
Eggers has previously written and directedthe folk horror filmThe Witch,The Lighthouse, and the historical action movieThe Northman. Though some of his part work has largely defied genres, each of his three previous films has featured some aspect of horror, thoughNosferatuis his first foray into full gothic horror. Like his past films, theNosferatutrailer showcases Eggers' knack for slow-building tension and atmospheric dread, skillfully using sound design, cinematography, and pacing to create a sense of unease and suspense.
As seen in theNosferatutrailer, Eggers' distinctive visual style features stark, moody, and meticulously composed shots, using lighting, shadows, and a period-accurate setting to create a visually rich and haunting aesthetic. While there are some supernatural elements in Eggers' films, especiallyNosferatu, much of the horror comes from psychological and existential dread, focusing on Ellen Hutter’s dark dreams and slow descent into madness. This is howtheNosferatutrailer is able to convey such a sense of terror without revealing a full look atSkarsgård’s titular vampire.

Bill Skarsgård Played A Vampire 11 Years Before Nosferatu (But You Missed It)
Bill Skarsgård is playing Nosferatu in the 2024 remake of this horror classic, but this isn’t the first time he has played a vampire.
Though the trailer doesn’t actually show Skarsgård’s face, Count Orlok’s haunting presence looms large throughout. In what appear to be dream sequences, his slender hand chokes Ellen in her sleep, making for a jarring jump scare, followed by a truly foreboding shadow of his hand over the town. The trailer ends by showing a dark silhouette of Skarsgård’s vampire. By keeping Count Orlok obscured, theNosferatutrailer, in true Eggers' fashion, maintains a sense of ambiguity which allows fear to grow in the audiences' mind and keeps them waiting in suspense for the full reveal.
