Summary
One of Ash’s most impressive and unique abilities in thePokémonanime is his capacity to see and use Aura powers, a supernatural ability closely associated with the Pokémon Lucario. While Ash first manifests these abilities back in the lateRuby and Sapphireera, they continued to be relevant to him throughout the run of the series, even well intoJourneys. However, the Aura abilities have a very interesting origin, which lies in the filmLucario and the Mystery of Mew.
InLucario and the Mystery of Mew, fans are introduced to a character from the distant past, a so-called “Aura Guardian” known as Sir Aaron. Sir Aaron bears more than a passing resemblance to Ash, and is shown to have been a great hero who used his Aura powers, in conjunction with his Lucario, to help stop a war between two kingdoms. However, at some point, Sir Aaron was forced to seal his Lucario away in a staff, in which it remained until that scepter fell into the hands of Ash Ketchum.
Ash’s latent Aura abilities awakened Lucario, allowing it to break the seal and rematerialize for the first time in hundreds of years.

Ash’s Ties to Sir Aaron Go Surprisingly Deep
When Lucario first emerges from the scepter, it can’t see, and uses its Aura powers to sense who is nearby. It immediately senses Ash’s presence, but mistakes it for that of Sir Aaron, later saying that their Auras are extremely similar. Ash is even able to use Sir Aaron’s gloves, which aid in the use of Aura abilities, allowing him, even as a novice, to have great skill with Aura. It’s revealed that Sir Aaron died sacrificing himself to save the Tree of Life, using his Aura abilities to channel the energy and restore the tree, and that he sealed Lucario to spare it the same fate.
Throughout the film, there’s something of an implication thatAsh is a reincarnated version of Sir Aaron, as suggested by their similar appearance and near-identical Auras. Ash even dresses in Sir Aaron’s clothes at one point to hammer the idea home.This offers an explanation as to the source of Ash’s extraordinary ability with Aura, which is pretty much unknown in his home region of Kanto. Ash’s skill with Aura would only grow from this point forward, playing a role in things likethe Bond Phenomenon which resulted in Ash Greninja.
Interestingly, Ash would go on to become more like Sir Aaron as the series continued, finally acquiring a Lucario of his own inJourneys. Ash’s aptitude with Aura abilities made him an excellent trainer for his Lucario, and the two developed a close bond, much like Sir Aaron and his own Lucario. Despite this, Sir Aaron isn’t mentioned outside of this movie, even with Aura’s continued relevance and Ash’s use of it. Whether Ash is the literal reincarnation of Sir Aaron or not, his love ofPokémon, willingness to risk himself for the greater good, and incredible skill at Aura make him a fantastic candidate for a successor to the ancient hero.
