In the alternate universe ofSons of Star Trek, the Federation is fighting a costly war with the Breen and issue three reveals the mysterious race is working on a fearsome new weapon that could end the war for good.
Sons of Star Trek#3 is written by Morgan Hampton and drawn by Angel Hernandez. Nog is trying to return to his home universe, while at the same time helping theUSS Averyfight off a Breen attack.Helping him is Lieutenant Shaw, who tells Nog theChimerais on its way. TheChimerais a Breen super weapon cloaked in mystery: everyone who sees it does not live to report it.

TheChimerais rumored to consist of a Breen ship augmented by captured Starfleet warp cores.
The Breen Started as a Running Joke–Then It Became Serious

The Breen began as something of a running joke in theStar Trekuniverse. They were mentioned for many years in different shows, with the implication that they were a hostile race. A sole Breen debuted duringStar Trek: Deep Space Nine’sfourth season. During the show’s seventh season, the Breen allied themselves with the Dominion. Their entry late into the war, coupled with weapons that could drain energy, nearly cost the Federation. The Breen were one of the few races to successfully attack Earth. The Breen are still considered a threat as late as the 32nd century.

Shaw acknowledges that what is known about theChimeracomes from rumors and hearsay, and given the Breen’s secretive nature, this is only fitting. The Breen were first mentioned duringStar Trek: The Next Generation’sfourth season. By the time they appeared on-screen a few years later, the Breen had already built a reputation both in the show and throughout theStar Trekuniverse as a mysterious, but powerful, race. Their actions during the Dominion War cost many lives, and they showed no mercy and performed no penance for what they did.

By keeping theChimera’sspecifics under wraps, the Breen is committing a potential psy-op against the Federation. It is possible theChimerais a powerful weapon, but may not live up to the hype. Regardless, the Breen has theStar Trekuniverse running scared at the prospect of theChimera,their new super weapon.
