Put on your thinking caps as it is time for Thursday’sConnectionspuzzle. At first glance, this puzzle looks a little more difficult than it really is, as the words do not automatically have groupings that are obvious. However, digging a little deeper the puzzle is not as difficult once you understand what the editor was going for.

If you fancyConnections, you might also like playing theNYT’sVertexgame, which still requires a thinking cap but in a different way. InVertex, players will make a picture by connecting specific dots, which feels cathartic and satisfying. The trick is that each dot can only have a certain number of connections, and you will have to figure out which ones go together.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

JUNE 13 #367

If you want to think out the individual words for yourself, use these category names to help you achieve success.

FANCY

LIKE

This one was easier today, as LIKE and APPRECIATE caught our attention as being synonyms. Glancing around, the only other verbs that were similar enough to fit were DIG and FANCY, which did appeal to our Elizabeth Bennet sentimentality. It’s nice to have an older word thrown in now and then for those of us who feel a bit out of touch.

SMASH

SUCCESS

HIT and SMASH looked like they went together but for different reasons than we should have been looking for. At a basic definition level, these two could be considered synonyms. However, SENSATION and SUCCESS also went together without the other two, and we finally, and literally, put two and two together that these all can mean the same thing in a Blockbuster context. And, while we are at it, R.I.P. Blockbuster.

8 NYT Tiles Strategies To Score Huge Combos

The Tiles game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to use various strategies to pair matching visual patterns together to build huge combos.

SHIRT

STICKER

Ever been forced to participate in giving away your school’s swag at recruiting events? Well, if you have, you will have an advantage in this category as it is all about the free swag that’s often given away in promotions. BUTTON, HAT, and SHIRT were all clothing, so it felt right that these went together. Figuring STICKER out was a little more challenging but it was also the only clothing-adjacent word left for this category.

PASTE

THAT

As usual, this was the last category left and therefore simpler to solve. However, PASTE gave us some trouble as we thought STICKER and PASTE might belong together earlier in the puzzle. That being said, THAT did not seem like it fit as well into this category. Yes, it can be used after “Copy” but it is not a common phrase that’s used in the same way the others are. Lucky it was the only word left for us.
